Rise in Fatal Accident and How to Reduce Them
By Joanne Lee
The marked increase in fatal accidents on Malaysian roads is a cause for concern. In fact, Malaysia has one of the highest accident rates in the world, for a population of only 24 million.
During the festive season, our country records the highest number of fatal accidents involving vehichles. Very often, entire families were killed in road accidents. There are many factors as to the cause of road accidents such as drunk driving, negligent and reckless driving, talking or messaging on the mobile phone while driving and exhaustion and tiredness of the driver.
According to the statistics released by the police, drunk driving is the major factor of road accidents in Malaysia. Despite the heavy fines, the number of accidents caused by drunk drivers continues to soar. So, the government has decided to impose a prohibitive fine and a concurrent jail sentence to act as a deterrent.
Negligent and reckless driving is also another cause of road accidents in Malaysia. There is a significant increase in the number of young drivers on the road. Some of them are over-confident, negligent and reckless while driving on the road. They also flout the traffic rules like skipping the red light. the government should increase the legal age for obtaining driving license. Those found guilty of reckless driving should not have their licenses renewed.
Mobile phone users in Malaysia have skyrocketed. There are regulations to forbid drivers from taking or messaging on the mobile phone while driving but many have been caught for committing this offence. This is because the fine on RM300 has not deterred them, thus resulting in ever increasing rate of accidents. In order to be effective, the government should impose a heavier fine or a jail torm on the offenders who cause fatal road accidents.
Many accidents are cause by drivers who are unable to focus on the road, especially on a long journey. This is extremely serious during the festive season when many people return to their hometowns to celebrate the festivals. More awareness campaigns on the road safety should be organised. Drivers shlould also be reminded to have adequate sleep before embarking on a long journey on the road and rest when they are exhausted.
It is hoped that the number of fatal accidents on the road accidents are a waste of human lives and need to be prevented at all costs.
